Quilmes Appeals FIFA Sanction to CAS

Buenos Aires, Dec 23 (NA) — Quilmes announced on Tuesday that it has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the sanction imposed by FIFA, which bars the club from signing players until 2027. The club also confirmed that the reinforcements announced in recent days are eligible to play in the next tournament.

According to information from the Argentine News Agency, the club's management based its appeal on the existence of a ruling by an Argentine court that allows for the signing of players and prevents the application of sanctions related to pre-concursal credits. Therefore, the current ban would have no practical effect at the local level.

In its official statement, Quilmes emphasized that, beyond the eligibility of the already-signed players and those who will join soon, its priority is to definitively resolve the underlying issue with international bodies, aiming to provide legal certainty and institutional predictability for the future.

The FIFA sanction stems from an old dispute with Chile's Unión La Calera over the transfer of goalkeeper Lucas Giovine in 2016. The Argentine club explained that the debt claim was filed outside of a creditors' preventive proceeding and that, despite previous rulings recognizing this fact, a notification sent to a non-existent email address prevented it from mounting a defense, leading to the current penalty.

While awaiting a CAS ruling, Quilmes confirmed it will continue to report any developments related to the process and expressed confidence that the appeal will allow the ban currently in place to be lifted.
